Mercedes-Benz introduced the 190E, the “Baby Benz”, in 1982. A record amount of 2.3 billion Deutsche Mark was spent on research and development. Designed on safety principles, with programmed crumple zones, a reinforced passenger cell with up to two airbags.
For the chassis, 40 different variants were developed to find the perfect solution, finally opting for a rear axle with five struts called multilink, wishbone suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars. Essentially, this suspension has been used on all luxury cars ever since.
High quality materials and durable solutions were chosen for all components, and the 190s saw the introduction of Mercedes’ famous concept of ‘over engineering’, which was most characteristic of Mercedes designed in the 1980s.
The 190 essel was also intended to appeal to young people and indeed: thanks to its lightweight body and excellent roadholding, it offers a very sporty driving experience.
The 190 E 2.6 is the largest engine, the only six-cylinder version, with the same acceleration (8.1 seconds to 100 km/h) as the 2.3-16 version, but with the 2.6’s low rev torquie carasteristic. Its acceleration is dynamic and smooth, and it is a pleasure to drive throughout the rev-range. On the motorway, it is also superb, not only thanks to its engine but also thanks to its professional chassis.
The current model is in almost perfect technical and aesthetic condition, with no faults, the boot lid needs repair in one place.
It comes from Southern Europe, so no rust. Previous owner was a mechanic who kept it in good condition. It has its original owner’s manual and other documents.
